Mandarin Tone 2 Coarticulation: Phonetic or phonological?
نویسنده
چکیده
Tone processes in Chinese languages can be identified as phonological or phonetic. In the literature, this distinction is often made by referring to them as either tone sandhi (phonological) or tonal coarticulation (phonetic). However, while it is unchallenged that certain processes (e.g. Standard Mandarin Tone 3 Sandhi) belong to the phonological camp, some other tone processes that are considered phonetic may infact display both properties of sandhi and coarticulation. The current paper investigates the mixed properties of Mandarin Tone 2 (T2) Coarticulation (Wu, 1985; Chen, 2000) observed in preliminary production data. I begin by discussing the properties of tonal processes that make them either phonological or phonetic (§2.1), why the coarticulation process of interest may display both types of properties (§2.2), as well as the remaining unresolved issues regarding this tonal process that has prompted this study (§2.3). I will then present the methods of the production study (§3), the results (§4), what it may reveal about the process (§5), and finally a summary of the findings (§6).

Production of lexical tones by Southern Min-Mandarin bilinguals
This is a preliminary study examining the tonal production of L1 Taiwanese Southern Min (TSM) speakers who are also fluent in Mandarin. Both languages have tone sandhi rules in which certain lexical tones are neutralized in non-XP-final positions. Disyllabic Mandarin and TSM words with different tonal combinations in frame sentences were examined. The results suggest that Mandarin Tone 1, Tone ...
متن کاملTonal Coarticulation in Northern Vietnamese
This experiment shows that in Northern Vietnamese (NV) progressive tone coarticulation is stronger than anticipatory coarticulation. It also sheds some light on the nature of distinctive features in NV: voice quality measurements show that glottalization is essential to tone contrast, which reduces the role of pitch and leads to a phonological analysis in which each of the 6 tones has a single ...
متن کاملPhonetic complexity affects children’s Mandarin tone production accuracy in disyllabic words: A perceptual study
This is the first study to examine the effect of phonetic contexts on children's lexical tone production. Mandarin tones in disyllabic words produced by forty-four 2- to 6-year-old children and twelve mothers were low-pass filtered to eliminate lexical information. Native Mandarin-speaking adults categorized the tones based on the pitch information in the filtered stimuli. All mothers' tones we...
متن کاملThe Effects of Linguistic Experience on Perceptual Assimilation of Lexical Tone
This study examines the effects of L1 tone experience and L2 learning experience on tone assimilation. It has been proposed that perceptual assimilation of segments is tied to L1 and L2 contrasts at the phonetic level for listeners without L2 experience [1] but at both phonetic and phonological levels for those with L2 experience [2]. In this examination of perceptual assimilation of lexical to...
متن کاملProsodic grouping in Chinese trisyllabic structures by multiple cues – tone coarticulation, tone sandhi and consonant lenition
Traditionally, the prosodic domain as has been called ‘foot’ in Mandarin Chinese is considered to be derivable from the application of Tone 3 sandhi rule. This study investigated the internal prosodic grouping of Chinese trisyllabic structures by examining multiple cues in parallel – tone coarticulation, tone sandhi application and consonant lenition. Analyses by tone coarticulation and consona...
